The development and evolution of the persistent counterclockwise circulation in Suo-Nada have been studied in detail using
a three-dimensional numerical model. The realistic circulation has been reproduced from the monthly climatological fields
of salinity, temperature along the open boundary, wind, heat flux and buoyancy input from twenty-two major rivers surrounding
the basin. The seasonal variation of fresh-water discharge from the rivers proved to be the most important forcing mechanism
driving the circulation. The expansion and contraction of coastal low salinity water well corresponded with the development
of counterclockwise circulation from spring to summer and dissipation from autumn to winter. The circulation was found to
be vertically homogenous and quasi-barotropic. However, confined along the coastal zone is an estuarine flow (i.e., oppositely
directed currents in the upper and lower layers) whose horizontal dimension conforms to the period of maximum buoyancy flux
from the rivers. This indicates that the flow pattern in Suo-Nada can be separated into two distinct regions where the relative
dominance of estuarine circulation plays a significant role. Furthermore, the monthly water exchange capacity for autonomous
purification of the basin has been evaluated from the average residence time of conservative material based on the calculated
current field. It is demonstrated that the kinetic energy of the basin is directly responsible in promoting water exchange
in Suo-Nada.

The seasonal abundance of the dominant dinoflagellate, Ceratium fusus, was investigated from January 2000 to December 2003 in a coastal region of Sagami Bay, Japan. The growth of this species
was also examined under laboratory conditions. In Sagami Bay, C. fusus increased significantly from April to September, and decreased from November to February, though it was found at all times
through out the observation period. C. fusus increased markedly in September 2001 and August 2003 after heavy rainfalls that produced pycnoclines. Rapid growth was observed
over a salinity range of 24 to 30, with the highest specific rate of 0.59 d−1 measured under the following conditions: salinity 27, temperature 24°C, photon irradiance 600 μmol m−2s−1. The growth rate of C. fusus increased with increasing irradiance from 58 to 216 μmol m−2s−1, plateauing between 216 and 796 μmol m−2s−1 under all temperature and salinity treatments (except at a temperature of 12°C). Both field and laboratory experiments indicated
that C. fusus has the ability to grow under wide ranges of water temperatures (14–28°C), salinities (20–34), and photon irradiance (50–800
μmol m−2s−1); it is also able to grow at low nutrient concentrations. This physiological flexibility ensures that populations persist

The wind-induced sea-level variations at Hakata tidal station in winter are reproduced realistically using a one-way nested
model. This nested model is constructed with a structured finite-difference Princeton Ocean Model (POM) for the Tsushima-Korea
Straits, and an unstructured Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) for Fukuoka Bay divided into triangular-cell grids.
The correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error between observed and modeled results are 0.742 and 1.88 [cm], respectively.
Moreover, the results show that the nested model with FVCOM is more accurate than the model in which FVCOM is replaced with
a high-resolution POM for Fukuoka Bay. This indicates that the nested model constructed with structured and unstructured models

An attempt was made to reproduce the circulation pattern in Suo-Nada, Japan during spring and summer season in order to elucidate
the water exchange mechanism in the basin. Two hydrographic surveys at the end of each season were conducted covering the
entire Suo-Nada area. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was used to compute the current resulting
from the observed density and wind field. During spring, a very pronounced counter clockwise gyre is situated near the opening
of the basin. This is replaced by a clockwise circulation which seemed to occupy the whole domain during summer. Within each
season, however, the vertical distribution of current does not show any remarkable differences, indicating the dominance of
horizontal current and a very weak estuarine flow. These observational and numerical results were used to estimate the remnant
function and the corresponding average residence time of permanently dissolved matter (PDM) and transformable matter (TM).
The results revealed a small difference in the average residence times of materials within each season but a large seasonal
variability between spring and summer. Furthermore, calculations based on climatological density fields have indicated a similar
trend of variation between the seasonal values of average residence times.

Sediments and overlying water collected using Multiple Corer (MC) and Box Corer (BC) at three stations in Suruga Bay were compared from the view points of meiobenthic and chemical characteristics. Dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonium and nitrite concentrations of the overlying waters were lower, whereas nitrate and phosphate concentrations were higher constantly in the samples collected by MC than those by BC, suggesting contamination of surface seawater in the BC samples. Sediments were sliced into 0–1, 1–2 and 2–3 cm layers, and water content and Eh, and abundance of meiofauna were analyzed. Water content in MC samples was always higher than BC ones. For the whole meiobenthos, MC collected significantly more individuals than BC at only one out of three stations, whereas for harpacticoid copepods, which aggregated to the surface layer of the sediment, MC constantly collected significantly more individuals than BC. In the vertical profiles of both water content and meiofaunal density, data of 0–1, and 1–2 cm layers in the BC samples were similar to those of 1–2 and 2–3 cm layers in the MC samples, respectively. An algorithm is presented to retrieve the concentrations of chlorophyll a, suspended pariclulate matter and yellow substance
from normalized water-leaving radiances of the Ocean Color and Temperature Sensor (OCTS) of the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite
(ADEOS). It is based on a neural network (NN) algorithm, which is used for the rapid inversion of a radiative transfer procedure
with the goal of retrieving not only the concentrations of chlorophyll a but also the two other components that determine the water-leaving radiance spectrum. The NN algorithm was tested using the
NASA's SeaBAM (SeaWiFS Bio-Optical Mini-Workshop) test data set and applied to ADEOS/OCTS data of the Northwest Pacific in
the region off Sanriku, Japan. The root-mean-square error between chlorophyll a concentrations derived from the SeaBAM reflectance data and the chlorophyll a measurements is 0.62. The retrieved chlorophyll a concentrations of the OCTS data were compared with the corresponding distribution obtained by the standard OCTS algorithm.
The concentrations and distribution patterns from both algorithms match for open ocean areas. Since there are no standard
OCTS products available for yellow substance and suspended matter and no in situ measurements available for validation, the result of the retrieval by the NN for these two variables could only be assessed
by a general knowledge of their concentrations and distribution patterns.

Space observations of solar flares such as those from Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, and RHESSI have revealed a lot of observational
evidence of magnetic reconnection in solar flares: cusp-shaped arcades, reconnection inflows, plasmoids, etc. Thus it has
been established, at least phenomenologically, that magnetic reconnection does occur in solar flares. However, a number of
fundamental questions and puzzles still remain in the physics of reconnection in solar flares. In this paper, we discuss the
recent progresses and future prospects in the study of magnetic reconnection in solar flares from both theoretical and observational

There are several observations showing an enhancement of infrared emission and optical polarization at a distance of 4R

is the angular radius of the Sun) implying a ring of dust in near-ecliptic orbit about the Sun; but there is an almost equal number of observations, which do not show any such enhancement. We plotted the observational results for the detection and the non-detection of the circum-solar dust on a diagram for the variation of the sun-spot number with time, and found that its detection and non-detection occurred near the solar minimum and maximum phases, respectively. We present the possibility that this phenomena is caused by an additional process, i.e., the Lorentz force acting on a charged dust particle. Since, at the maximum phase a dust particle in a near-solar region acquires a higher positive potential, and the solar magnetic field is very strong, the Lorentz force becomes dominant and can affect the orbit of the dust particle. 相似文献
